446. 13 things for 2013.

Untitled.

01. Start running again. I was really enjoying running, getting the exercise and the fresh air, feeling better about myself. Then it got cold, and dark, and I thought of a million excuses not to - I didn't want Joshua getting cold, I didn't feel great etc. Next year I'm going to run three times a week. I'm going to do the C25k plan again to start, not right from the beginning, and then probably 5 miles each time, then working my way to 10k eventually. My main goal though is to go three times a week.

02. Making healthier choices. Alongside #01, I want to start eating healthily, especially when it comes to snacking. Eating in general is pretty good, it's my sweet tooth that gets me. I might start tracking my calories again, it's important to me that I get enough to ensure my milk supply doesn't suffer but that I'm not just eating empty calories. I've ordered a ton of fruit with our shopping this week, and want to eliminate snacking in the evenings.

03. Take a portrait of my boys once a week, every week. The lovely Jodi at Che and Fidel did this project last year too, and it's wonderful to see the little changes and how they've grown.

04. Continue Joshua's monthly updates. Speaking of pictures, I'm determined to keep up with the monthly pictures & updates. I'm doing pretty well, 6 months in (I have the pictures and notes for the latest I swear!) and really hope to continue.

05. Sleep training. The dreaded sleep training. Over Christmas, without our usual routine, it has become more apparent how much of a pain it is that Joshua will not self-soothe, or actually fall asleep without being fed/in his pram. I'm still putting it off, as he's pretty poorly with a nasty cough and cold, but soon it will have to happen.

06. Try a new recipe a week. I'm stuck in a bit of a meal-planning rut, always the same ones over and over. It is hard, with Daniel being fussy and me being vegetarian (Colin won't eat a meal without meat!) but with Pinterest at my fingertips I have a ton of inspiration. Even just a new side, or cookie, will count though. Sometimes I don't have the time, or the patience, for an elaborate meal!

07. Read with the boys every day. We were always quite good with this, but recently we have been neglecting our(very full!) bookshelf. Both boys love stories, and I want this to continue for years, which will only happen if I encourage it. Even on our busiest days,we an find five minutes to share a book, surely.

08. Teach Daniel the alphabet & numbers. Sure, kiddo can count to fifteen, but the only numbers he actually recognises are 2 & 7! It has just completely slipped my mind, and to be honest I thought he would still be too young for it! I'm hoping to include some fun activities too, stay tuned!

09. Spend more one-on-one time with Colin. My hard-working fiancé isn't home often, so it's important to me that the time we do get together we spend as a family. It's occurred to me recently though that we barely spend any time just the two of us, except in the evenings when we're surrounded by phones, iPads and the TV. It would probably do the boys good to spend some time away from us too, maybe. I'm in denial about that last part. But maybe a date once a month? That sounds feasible! Wonderful, in fact!

10. Plan both boys' birthdays, and Joshua's Christening. I'm terrible at leaving everything to the last minute, & therefore rushing and panicking about things. Not this year. I've started pinning ideas for Daniels' (Toy Story or Pirate theme!) and want to start buying/crafting early so everything is done.

11. Post a Home Tour. We moved into our own house at the beginning of December and although we are mostly organised and unpacked, there' still quite a few tweaks I'd like to make. Instead of just dreaming about it, I want to get it done and be proud of it.

12. Organise our paperwork. And keep it organised. Right now we have at least two boxes, and random piles, of paperwork to sort through. I want to get it done, and stay on top of it (but i don't want to actually do it!) In the past I've organised it, and then thrown all the new stuff on top - not so organised. Not this year! There will be drawers, binders, colour co-ordination, the works!

13. Make memories with my boys. The most important thing to me this year is to make sure my boys are happy. I want them to remember how much fun they had when they're older, and even if they don't remember this particular year I want to start now. Working on my patience, especially with Daniel, is key. Organising activities to keep us all entertained and happy, and away from the TV too! Taking pictures to remember, writing about the little things too. This little blog will be a big part of that, and I'm excited about it.

So, there are my thirteen (very detailed, long-winded, quite unexciting!) resolutions for the new year. I'm hoping posting them will make me more accountable. I'm also hoping to blog about my progress, share photographs and recipes etc. Do you have any resolutions, or hopes, or goals for the new year? Come and share, I'd love to read about them!

My family take terrible photos, in general. Also, Joshua is not drinking that beer, he kept reaching for it and it looked funny!
My brain isn't quite functioning tonight, I've caught a horrible cold off the boys and though sometimes I feel okay, right now I'm feeling awful. Zero energy & a very sniffly nose. But Phil Taylor is playing in the darts semi-final tonight, so I'm going to snuggle under a blanket and eat chocolate to make me feel better.

444. Christmas crafting, with a toddler.

Daniel and I got stuck into the crafty side of this festive season, choosing to hand-make gifts for some of our favourite people. I love giving (and receiving!) handmade, I think it makes things that little bit more special, when so much effort has gone into it. Daniel loves crafting too, drawing and painting are his favourites! Here are some of our projects!

Salt dough ornaments.

I posted about making these here, but I wanted to show the finished product. Daniel was so proud of these, and loved giving them out to people as gifts.

Potato printing wrapping.

P1170790
P1170791
P1170794

I literally cut a star & tree shape out of a potato and gave Daniel some green paint, alongside some of our brown wrapping paper. I had to help him push it down, as alone the potato was sliding across the paper! Such a great personalised tough when wrapping gifts!

Decorated tote bags.

P1170945
P1170940
P1170944

I bought half a dozen canvas tote bags and some fabric crayons off eBay, weighed the bags down on the table (with our advent calendar!) and let Daniel go to town with the crayons. We gave these bags to my Mum and Nans, they loved them, who doesn't need a shopping bag though! Next time I would try and get sturdier bags, these were really quite thin & flimsy.

We're still unwinding after the Christmas mania, hanging around in pyjamas and eating rubbish. We have a couple more gatherings to look forward too, to celebrate the New Year, with family and friends. Speaking of which, I am hosting a linky with Heather from The Glambulance, like a bucket list for next year. Mine's going to include my resolutions, anything goes! I'd love you to link up too!

Christmas, this year, was magical. Daniel is at an age where he 'gets it', and it was Joshua's first Christmas. Crazy to think that last year he was just a tiny little squirt in my belly!

Christmas Eve I went out for drinks with some friends, and had a little too much wine. Unfortunately, Christmas morning is therefore a little fuzzy. I had grand plans of being semi-presentable (I.e. partly made-up), us all in Christmas pyjamas to take some beautiful pictures. That didn't quite happen as I wasn't very willing to move, at all. Never again will I drink a bottle of wine on Christmas Eve.

We spent the early morning just as our little family, opening presents and un-packaging toys, until Colin's family came over. They brought croissants & more gifts for the boys, and after a little barney we had a nice little breakfast. We then got our glad rags on & headed over to my parents'. Both boys looked adorable in their Christmas outfits, but I still wasn't up to much except clutch a glass of water and laugh at my cousins' stupidity.

My Mama cooked us all (twelve of us!) a wonderful Christmas dinner, four fantastic courses. I'll never know how she does it, she's like superwoman! She even managed to include eight of our five a day in our main meal - perhaps the vegetables went a little overboard! We had visits from other family members who didn't join us for dinner, but popped in for a drink & to exchange more presents! One of my favourite parts of Christmas is spending hours sitting round the table with my favourite people, drinking, eating, talking and laughing. Daniel wasn't at all interested in opening any presents after opening two giant cars, but after dinner we managed to convince him to open the rest! He was SO spoiled! Joshua got some lovely gifts too, but he doesn't really need/want for very much, so Daniel was the centre of attention!

We went back to my Mum's Boxing Day too, for yet more of the same. The boys had a couple of late nights but were great about it, they've both got coughs and colds too, Joshua especially was a little trouper! Poor babe has barely let me put him down for the last few days, just wanting Mama cuddles to make him feel better, I hope it clears up soon, it's heartbreaking!

Happy Holidays!

Short and sweet again tonight, I've just realised I'll have to wrap the boys' presents tonight because I'm going out with some friends tomorrow! We've been doing lots of exciting Christmas-things, a pre-school party, baking, shopping & crafting. It's been a good week, but I'm even more excited for next week! Two sleeps!!

A few pictures from yesterday, on our way home from running an errand we stopped to jump up and down in muddy puddles. It's the little things! Daniel had so much fun, unfortunately he's quite sniffly today, probably because of it, but oh well. Living for the moment.

A short and sweet post tonight. I've just found out a girl I went to school with died in a car accident last night, though I didn't really know her it's always so much scarier when it's so close to home. What with the shootings in Conneticut, which I haven't written about because I don't feel there are the right words to say, I'm feeling very pensive.

We were up at the crack of dawn this morning (5:30am actually, hours before dawn) & I've been grumpy and snappy all day. I feel terrible. But I have tomorrow with my babies, to make everything better. To tell them I am sorry, that I love them. I'm so grateful for my life, for my boys.

Bananas are a great first food for babies, they're easy to prepare & full of slow-release sugars which provide sustained energy (they are also good for the treatment of diarrhoea and constipation!) I find them great for days when we're out and about, pop a banana & a spoon in my bag and at lunchtime I mash it up with a fork (the first few times I added a little milk too, but now we're progressing onto thicker textures!) Joshua seems to really like banana, contrary to the first few pictures! I even gave him a chunk to gnaw on (under close supervision of course!) which he seemed to love! I'm intrigued by baby led weaning, and though it's not totally for us I am introducing some finger foods to Joshua, as he gets cross when we're eating and it's tough to feed three people at once!
