305. Brothers.

[Introductions]

It's hard to believe that those pictures were taken nearly two weeks ago, Daniel laying eyes on his baby brother for the first time. He seemed genuinely pleased, which warmed my heart because of all the horror stories you hear about older children being jealous of new babies! Not that I'm surprised, I said all along I thought that Daniel would be a fantastic big brother, and he really is! From day one he's been loving and kind, sharing his toys and giving Joshua kisses! He even asks to hold him, we didn't even encourage him at first but he loves a quick cuddle! He gets concerned if he cries, and tells me to pick him up, and he doesn't seem jealous if I'm holding him, even if it means I can't do something for him. This may be down to the fact he has had someone else here to pay attention to him (Colin, or my Mum or Dad) but even when we've been alone in the morning he's been fantastic.

I've already spent a fair amount of time alone with my two boys, Colin went back to work last week and my Dad was here, but not first thing in the morning or late afternoon, and we coped! I'm feeling more or less back to 'normal', my recovery has been much better this time around but I have been a little sore and found it difficult to spend a long time with Daniel down on his level. Luckily he's brilliant at playing independently and letting me tidy up/cook dinner, but I feel guilty letting him play by himself too much! I an feeling pretty damn good today though! Only time will tell I guess, next week when I'm totally alone with them both!

304. Flashback Friday. Prom.

Last night my cousins' had their school prom, and it made me feel nostalgic. They all looked super cute, and I remember the excitement of getting all dressed up and the madness that was the end of my school life. My prom was six years ago, I had to think about that for a minute and woah those six years have gone so fast! It feels like only yesterday I was 15 and still at school, hardly a care in the world (or responsibility!) spending every waking moment on a friends' garden with some of the most amazing friends, making even more amazing memories. I'm lucky to still be friends with some of them, they've always been there for me.

So, obviously, at 4am this morning I was looking back through old Facebook photos of our prom.

303. Embrace the Camera [006]

Yesterday I had some real time, just Daniel and I. With having my Dad off this week and Colin off last week, and obviously Joshua, we haven't had a lot of one-on-one time. Anyway, Daniel refused a nap, my Dad was out and Joshua was asleep, so we snuggled on the sofa and sang songs and read books together. It was pretty perfect and I realised how much I missed just playing with him. Today I made a decision to 'switch off' a little too (my twitter addiction was getting a little cray), that I could update but not check my various social networking apps until both boys were asleep. I also made sure to sit down with Daniel and do something when I wasn't busy with Joshua, or washing, and I'm really glad I did, we had a great day - though I'm exhausted now!

301. Next Mummy Stylist Blogger Comp

One of my favourite boredom busters, when Colin's hogging the TV or the boys are napping, is to 'pretend shop' online. You know, browsing different shops and putting the things I like into my basket, wishful thinking! I've posted a few wish-lists here before. When I heard about the Next Mummy Stylist Blogger Comp , (hosted by mummy blogger Mirka Moore of allbabyadvice-blog.com.) I was pretty eager to join in, I love Next - the quality of the clothes is brilliant and they always have cute designs. finding boys clothes I like is quite difficult but Next is always a winner!

"All you need to do to enter is create a moodboard of the sorts of things you love to the value of £500 from this season’s Next maternity or childrenswear ranges – and write an accompanying blog post telling us why these are your fashion faves!"

My creation

My favourites from the 'younger boys' line, I got quite carried away! I love bright coloured skinny jeans on toddler boys, and regular skinny jeans too! I included a few basics, t-shirts and hoodies (we do, after all, live in England & jumpers are often needed!) Some summer essentials - some cute shorts & sunglasses ready for our holiday if the weather doesn't brighten up! Speaking of holiday, that little green wetsuit has dinosaur spikes AND is available in both my boys' sizes!! Shoes are my weakness, for both me and Daniel, 6 pairs is a little extreme but they're all so cute! Also, how adorable are those little toddler boxers?!

My creation

I also browsed the newborn section, even though we have ALL Daniel's little clothes for Joshua and his drawers are overflowing with just 0-3 month stuff!! When Daniel was tiny I loved little jeans on him, but this time I adore little leggings, maybe I'm trying to keep my baby a baby for longer this time? Those little chinos have me sold though! Chunky cardigans and rompers are top of my cute list too! Plus a couple of 'little brother' picks, just because.

300. One Week Old.

Untitled

One whole week. Seven days. Time sure does fly when you're having fun! Our first week as a family of four has been incredible, Colin had the week off and we had lots of lovely visitors to keep us all busy!

My little man had me worried at first with his feeding; he nursed straight away in the hospital, and once when we got home at about 3, but not again until 10am and even after that he didn't seem interested. The midwife we saw at the hospital wasn't particularly helpful, just telling me he had to eat and giving me tips to wake him up - but he was awake just not bothered! Luckily since then he's much more eager to eat, I'm feeding him every three hours in the hope he keeps sleeping well at night & gets into a routine, sometimes I have to wake him (especially in the morning) but more often than not he's like clockwork! I'm mixing in a little demand feeding too - if he wants it more often I'll oblige. It seems to be working too - at his day 5 midwife check he had only lost 50g and now he's up to 7lb 2oz! I've found a great app too to help me track his feeds, he often feeds for between 5-7 minutes on each side, though sometimes he'll fall half asleep and feed forever!

Joshua has been sleeping amazingly, the first couple of nights were difficult but he has also had some amazing nights - only waking once or twice for a feed & going straight back to sleep, little angel! He's sleeping a lot during the day too, definitely taking after his Daddy with his love of sleep! His awake time is pretty limited, but is increasing more and more everyday! I love to see those gorgeous dark eyes looking up at me, I can't help but pull silly faces & sing ridiculous songs!

My tiny little nugget is only in early baby clothes, I only had a couple of newborn outfits but even they were a little large on him! & we soon ran out of clean clothes that fit, despite my 'wash a day' rule! A lovely friend of mine, and my Mum, brought him some teeny outfits & they fit much better! I still can't get over how tiny he is, especially compared to Daniel! I was comparing pictures of them earlier and a major difference is the size of their cheeks!

His cord fell off yesterday, and looked pretty yucky! The midwife says it's fine though, and even discharged us this morning! His skin's a little dry, but nothing a little olive oil won't fix. The Health Visitor will take over soon, but i don't have any worries at all. My littlest man is nothing short of perfect, and we absolutely adore the newest addition to our family more than words can say!

The last two weeks have been a serious blur. An amazing blur, full of fun and changes. Joshua's arrived, as you can obviously tell by the slew of adorable pictures, and he's hogging a lot of Mama's attention. However, Daniel's been hogging Grandad's/Daddy's/Nanny's/all our visitors' so he doesn't seem to mind one bit!

Our last fortnight has included showers (Daniel's new favourite thing and the only thing that stopped him throwing a strop most mornings last week!), Mama snuggles (& hand holding, I melted!), story times, swimming with Nanny - amongst other things, my Mama had the week off, treats for me, swings with Uncle Connor, walks with the 'baby' while I was in labour, sharing, Milo checking out our new addition, proud Grandad, my little photographer, a first bath, newborn outfits that swamp my poor tiny babe, playtime, too-cute-for-words dinosaur dungarees for an even cuter baby, a first walk, a cheeky amount of Peppa on the iPad, working hard on the computer, a stupidly short car nap & a lot of staring at that perfect little face.

298. Joshua Reg's Birth Story

P1140454

Joshua Reg was due on Tuesday 12th April 2012 and everyone, including myself, thought he was going to make an early appearance - my Mum even took the 2 weeks around his due date off! But 3 days later & still no baby. I was keeping the world updated via Facebook, and getting frustrated with every text or call I got asking questions.

P1140456

Friday afternoon I was at my parents' and my stomach started to feel weird, so my Mum walked with me home. I'm not sure when exactly, as I wasn't sure it was for real, but I started getting contractions that evening. I had a warm bath and went to bed early, thinking maybe tonight was the night! I tried timing them through the night but kept falling back asleep too quickly! I called the hospital the next morning and they said to listen to my body and come in when I felt something change, or my waters broke - my contractions were still quite far apart and quite sporadic so I agreed and went about my day. My parents came over, my Mum was my second birthing partner and Dad was designated Daniel sitter so they wanted to be close by. Saturday evening nothing much had changed, so they went home once we had put Daniel to bed, expecting a phone call in the middle of the night.

P1140458

Colin's Mum called us early Sunday morning and freaked me out because I'd been contracting for so long and she was worried. I called the hospital again and the midwife said she didn't think I was really in labour because the contractions weren't regular still, and to call again when my waters broke. My waters didn't break with Daniel until I started to push, so I was a little concerned but there wasn't much I could do. I decided I wanted to keep busy so my parents came over again and we took Daniel to the park, then home for a nap, then to my Nan's, then back to theirs for dinner. I'm not sure when but things started to feel different that afternoon, more painful and more like something was happening, so when we got to my Mum's I decided to have a bath. During that amazing bath my contractions became 4 minutes apart and I decided it was probably time to head to the hospital, so we took Daniel home and put him to bed, called the hospital again who invited me in, and set off. I wasn't even convinced that this was it, but I felt I needed to go to put my mind at ease.

P1140462

Once we arrived, at around 8pm, the midwife checked my blood pressure, baby's heart rate etc and I asked her to examine me. She saw me have a contraction and decided that I was too relaxed to be in established labour and was reluctant to examine me because she would just have to do it again sooner. After saying that I'd rather go home than wait around if nothing was happening she agreed to, but disappeared and got caught up with another woman. My contractions got worse while we waited but I tried to breathe through them and think 'He'll be worth it' because I thought if this was only the start if was just going to get worse! We even did a crossword in between!

Untitled

She came back just before 10 and said she would hand me over to the night staff, who arrived at 10 and did examine me - I was 7cm dilated!! I was so proud of myself for making it that far without pain relief, but begged for some gas and air! The midwife, Frances, said that as soon as my waters broke I'd be having this baby, so I decided I needed to go to the toilet before everything started. Unfortunately, as soon as I got to the bathroom I realised I actually needed to push and started to freak out! My Mum was laughing at me because I was talking to myself trying to calm down, and I made it back across the hall to my room. Colin decided then HE needed the toilet, but I started to push again (I didn't have any control over it, my body pretty much did it my itself) and his head was crowning! Colin was on the phone to his Mum (!!) but made it just in time to see our baby come into the world, on my second push, at 10:16pm on Sunday 17th June.

width="640" height="480" alt="P1140468">

Joshua Reg was placed straight onto my chest and after delivering the placenta the midwife left us alone with our baby. I was so shocked at how fast everything had happened, and Colin was freaked because he nearly missed the birth! But we were overjoyed with our little bundle, who has quite a bit of dark hair - unlike his older brother! Joshua nuzzled into me and fed more or less straight away, and we took the obligatory hospital pictures.

Untitled

After a while, the midwife came back to weigh him - 6lb 15oz, again unlike his brother who was 8lb 8oz! She asked what I'd like to do next and I asked to go home as soon as I could, so unbelievably she said okay, all we needed to do was have a bath, go to the toilet and feed Joshua! By 1:30am we were home again, exhausted but incredibly happy!

297. A guest post, of sorts.

When I got up, Daddy said he had something to show me. I thought it was a toy, but there was a baby in Mummy's bedroom! Baby Jo-Jo! I share my toys with him, and hold him, and even give him kisses! Lots of friends have come to play this week, I've shown them all our new baby! They all like to take pictures, so I do too!
